Industry / field of work*:

Meet our Director of Finance and Business Operations, Georgette Stewart! Georgette joined our team with a background in systems building across social impact sectors, a passion for authenticity, and an eye for design.

Welcome Georgette! You’re the new Director of Finance and Business Operations. What does your role entail?

My role oversees Shift’s financial and organizational health by creating strategic financial systems and processes that help build a solid foundation upon which the organization can grow.

What’s different about the way Shift works?

Shift designs with people, not for them. There is an intentional investment in team culture, collaboration, and equitable system improvements. The external work we do with partners mirrors what happens internally—it is impressive to see that we practice what we preach.

Do you apply improvement methods to your life? If so, how?

I have a passion for motivating others to make constant progress in all parts of their personal and professional life. As a systematic person, I look for ways to improve ineffective processes and empower team members. That way, we can develop systems of accountability and enable people to contribute to organizational objectives and team culture.

Which
Shift principle resonates the most with you?

Keep it Real. Authenticity is key for me; we are all perfectly imperfect. Show up as you are and give your best effort. We work in a space that requires us to dig deep, exercise empathy, and recommend improvements. How can we do our best work if we are not keeping it real?

How do your past experiences positively impact your work at Shift?

I am a system builder committed to continuous improvement and the maturation of new and growing initiatives. I have worked with NGOs, nonprofits, and social impact organizations to improve organizational infrastructure and maintain effective business operations.

What is your hidden talent?

I have an eye for interior design. I help folks organize and enhance the quality of their living space.

What type of music is on your current playlist?

I listen to music every day, especially while I work. I play Mariah Carey’s Christmas album year-round. Hozier, Miguel, Snoh Aalegra, Pink Sweat$ mixed with tons of reggae!

What’s your favorite sport/sports team?

Track and field for the win.  Sprinting is popular in the Caribbean and as a native, we are taught the fundamentals of track and field from a young age. I enjoy sports that are quick and easy to follow.

What was the last book you read?

Make Your Bed: Little Things that Can Change Your Life by William H. McRaven. The simple act of making your bed has greater impact on your life than you would think. The book focuses on 10 life lessons of which start each day with an accomplishment sticks out as a lesson I try to revisit in my daily activities.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Swim! I love water—I love sailing and laying out on the beach. I don’t however, like being submerged by water. It’s a dislike I want to overcome!
